Zhejiang FC confirms Boupendza’s death, fans mourn on field

Zhejiang FC issued a statement late on April 16 confirming Gabon striker Aaron Boupendza, 28, died after falling from his rented apartment balcony in Hangzhou’s Yuhang district. The club called the news “deeply sorrowful” and offered condolences to his family. Police ruled out foul play but said the investigation continues.

During the CSL Round 7 home match against Meizhou Hakka on the same night, fans chanted Boupendza’s name in tribute. The club said he had been expected to start but missed the game for personal reasons.

Boupendza’s brief but bright CSL run

Born on Aug 7, 1996, Boupendza had played in Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the U.S. and Romania before joining Zhejiang FC ahead of the 2024 season. “I like to run, and my job is to score goals,” he told media before kickoff.

He quickly became one of the league’s top strikers, scoring braces in back-to-back games in Rounds 3 and 4 to finish fourth on the scoring chart with four goals. He called Zhejiang FC “a great team” and voiced optimism about their prospects.

Club and police respond to tragedy

Zhejiang FC said in its statement, “We are devastated by Boupendza’s passing and are fully cooperating with authorities.” Police arrived after the fall, examined the scene, interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage, concluding there was no foul play.

The club has begun arrangements for a memorial and said the team will honor Boupendza’s memory with stronger performances on the pitch. The head coach and teammates vowed to dedicate future results to him.

Tributes pour in from fans and peers

During the Round 7 home game, fans chanted Boupendza’s name in unison. Teammate Cédric Bakambu posted on social media, “May heaven have no pain.”

Several CSL clubs and players also shared tribute posters, paying last respects to the striker who died far from home.
